A huge people powered effort is now needed to stop the hunger and starvation suffered by millions in the Horn of Africa. The “Africa Aid 2011 – Stop the Famine” campaign is launched by http://www.Sharia.com .
Over 10 million people are affected by the severe famine, which has clearly been developing over the last 6 months and flagged to the international community on numerous occasions. We are once again seeing history being repeated in this region, where millions died in the previous famines not so long ago. Governments, United Nations and Charities have still not put in sufficient resources to cope with the tens of thousands of people who are in camps seeking basic food, water, shelter and medical care.
The question that quickly leaps to one’s mind is that, how is it possible that in 2011 such a desperate situation has been allowed to develop? The internet and modern communications allows leaders and senior decision makers to easily ascertain as to the seriousness and magnitude of tsunamis, earth quakes, floods and famines around the globe.
The Horn of Africa crisis has received inadequate media coverage, inadequate action by governments, inadequate response from The United Nations and inadequate action by the charities sector. Following this crisis now for some weeks, one can feel a huge sense of frustration. The little media coverage that is given to this crisis shows horrendous scenes of starving babies, emaciated children and their mothers.
