Horn of Africa Crisis –
For over a week I have toyed with idea of organising a “people effort” for Africa. Now, I think it is a must! Governments & NGO’s are not doing enough.

Major TV, News Media and Social Networks coverage is still missing. Thousands are dying every day.
This crisis has been developing for some months now. Even today it is not getting the media attention it desperately needs. Over 10 million people are affected in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Uganda. The Dadaab refugee camp alone has over 300,000 living in desperately poor conditions. Hundreds of children are dying daily from hunger and preventable diseases.
Conditions on the ground show that governments and NGO’s are not doing enough. In the age of Online Social Networks based change, as demonstrated by the “Arab Spring”, is it time for people power to step in and make a difference?

Over 10 million people are suffering from famine, hunger and violence in the Horn of Africa region.
Yet there is very little media coverage. Even more concerning is the inadequate level of activity by international governments and NGO’s to raise the massive amounts of funds needed to elleviate the suffering of these people.
I have just been online to check the Dabab refugee camp Kenya, reported to have over 200,000 people living under plastic sheeting spread over sticks. This is shocking and very distressing. What is becoming of us as people? These people need help desperately and now.
The Evening Standard London reports that, the G8 summit in Italy in 2009 promised £13 billion for agricultural projects in Africa. A report states that only one fifth of the money has been donated, with one year to go. This is quite dismal performance by our governments.
Please spend a few minutes and lobby your government ministers, local charities and social organisations to do more.

A special group of musicians have formed One World. “Freedom for Palestine” is a new song written by Dave Randall who is famous for playing guitar with the pop group Faithless. They have got together to give fresh publicity to this long running saga.
The idea is that you buy this single to push it up the charts so it gets played more on Radio & TV. Look at it same as if you are paying a few pence to buy a massive advert on Radio or TV.
This issue needs the oxygen of publicity to bring peace and harmony to the Middle East. Profits from sales of the song will go to Charities working in Palestine.
Your 79 pence spent buying this single is a massive punch to make the politicians and the media to sit-up and take notice. Major personalities have spoken out, stating that the BBC has recently being censoring some Palestinian related music/news.
You can join in this effort by spreading the word. Forward this message to all your contacts. Print this message and post it on notice boards at work/community centre.
Get your Imam/Priest/Rabbi or Community leaders to promote this message. Send this message to the local Newspaper, TV & Radio to cover. Most commentators agree that it is time this controversial and strategic issue is resolved. The politicians need to be pushed along by “people power” to act.

Muslims in India – are they benefitting from the massive economic progress of India?
Recently I have started to look at poverty in India and it seems that there are many indicators which show that the Muslim Community in many parts of India are not benefitting from the economic advancement of the Indian economy.
It’s a big subject and I am new to it. Does anyone have any insights in to this matter? If you have written anything or can now write a factual piece then please send it to us.
If it is good quality and you wish to have it published on Sharia Times blog we can do so.

Recent headline news published by TUC in the United Kingdom shows that over 50% of Muslim families in the UK live in poverty, when compared with average UK incomes.
Trades Union Congress study focused on the United Kingdom Muslims of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin. It found that some 69% of these communities live in poverty and at 43%, they have the lowest employment rate of any ethnic group.
Faced with such harsh reality Sharia.com has launched a London-UK site. The aim is that poor Muslims of London and United Kingdom can use www.Sharia.com/London to trade online and earn extra income.
Sharia.com allows poor Muslims from around the world as well as other poor communities to list and display their products and services for sale, for free. Buyers from the local area as well as worldwide are encouraged to trade with the poor, so they can earn an income and get out of poverty with dignity and pride. Aid and Charity to date have largely failed poor Muslims around the world.
The Sharia.com team requests individuals and groups to join in the effort with Sharia.com by becoming users of the website, become volunteers, interns, supporting members, cyber activists/warriors, journalist supporters and IT Geek supporters.
More information on how you can use the website and how to get involved can be seen in the Join Us section at www.Sharia.com

Muslims are the largest group of people who live in extreme poverty in the world today
Today over 500 million Muslims live in extreme poverty. From being leaders of the world in trade and commerce for almost 1,000 years, Muslims have now become one of the poorest communities.
At the beginning of the 19th Century approximately 5% of the worlds population were Muslims and they accounted for some 20% of the worlds trade and commerce. Today Muslims account for about 25% of the worlds population but account for only about 5% of the worlds GDP. What has gone wrong? Why are millions of Muslims worldwide falling into the poverty trap every year when Muslim countries are rich in natural resources?
This blog, ShariaTimes is a venue where we will enter into discussion and exchange ideas and views as to how we can reduce Muslim poverty. Furthermore, ShariaTimes will be concerned with the Muslim world as well as other world news and events of interest.
It is agreed universally that extreme poverty and hunger in a world of plenty is a "crime against humanity” and that it is the social responsibility of the better off people to assist the poor and the needy. So what can we do to reduce hunger and poverty amongst the Muslims as well as other poor communities worldwide?
After much research, planning and thinking about and around the subject of world poverty and in particular the increasing numbers of Muslims who live in extreme poverty we launched Sharia.com This online marketplace allows poor Muslims around the world as well as other poor people to trade online for free and potentially earn a living.
As an individual you can start to trade with Muslims and other poor communities via Sharia.com This can be by buying from the poor who list their products and services on Sharia.com. Or you may have items or services which will aid and assist the poor, list them online in Sharia.com. By asking low prices or donating some of these items or services you can make a big difference to people who live on or below the poverty line.
All business people can start using Sharia.com to trade. The more people we have utilising Sharia.com the bigger the chance we have helping the poor. You can visit Sharia.com to see further details of many other ways in which you can help.
If you have an idea on how to reduce poverty and hunger please let us know. If you can write well and want to send in your article please do so. We will consider it for publication here in ShariaTimes. If you want to become a Citizen Journalist by submitting articles, we will be glad to consider posting your article online. Joining forces we hope to present an alternative view point from the established media, which seems to be failing to adequately cover the issues and concerns of the poor and the weak.
There is quite a lot we as individuals and as a community can do and should do. The well-off community particularly those who live in the richer western economies have a social responsibility to help the poor to escape the poverty trap.
There are in excess of 20 million Muslims who live in Europe and the America’s. Compared to Muslims who live in Asia and Africa these people are considered wealthy. These Muslims often have established social, cultural, linguistic and religious links to the poor who live “back home”. Such understanding and empathy can be utilised to establish import and export business with their or their parents country of origin via Sharia.com. Such trading activities will benefit both parties commercially as well as socially. We look forward to your support and active participation in our endeavours, inshallah.
