There have been 42 droughts in the Horn of Africa since 1980, affecting an estimated 109 million people
47 million people have experienced drought in the region in the last decade. Animals are dying at a rate 40 to 60 percent above normal. Increasing numbers of refugees from Somalia are crossing the border into Kenya – up to 2,000 a day in some places. The mortality rate reaches five people per 10,000 per day. Acute malnutrition rates above 30 percent. 1.25 million children across southern Somalia are in urgent need of life-saving assistance. Approximately 1,300 refugees are arriving each day at the Dadaab camp in northeastern Kenya. These are merely a few facts that I have gathered during my research.
